5 Indian Athletes to watch out for at Tokyo Olympics 2021

 



Tokyo Summer Olympics 2021, originally scheduled for 2020, are finally going to commence from July 24, despite a surge in covid cases in Japan. The opening ceremony is scheduled for July 23 in the Japanese capital. The games will take place over a course of 16 days, from July 24 to August 8. The games were delayed for one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic across the world in 2020.

India, having bagged 28 medals(9 Gold, 7 Silver and 12 Bronze) overall in all the previous Olympic Games, is ready to prove it's mettle this year as well.

  • PV Sindhu


This star Badminton player, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, is the only women singles badminton player participating at the Tokyo Olympics this year. Her effort at the 2016 Rio Olympics to earn the silver medal for India is was a very proud moment for  all the Indians. Hope she performs her best this time and earns that gold medal for India.

Bajrang Punia is an Indian freestyle wrestler from Haryana. He competes in the 65 kg            weight category. He holds the record of winning 3 medals at the World Wrestling Championship. He is a sparkling ray of hope for India for bagging a medal in the Olympics this year. 
  • Deepika Kumari
        

Deepika Kumari is currently the World No. 1 ranked archeress, hailing from Ranchi, Jharkhand. Her recent performances at the 2021 Paris World Cup are assurance to expect a medal from her at Tokyo too. The 2014 Arjuna Award recipient has won 3 gold medals in aforementioned tournament and two gold medals in the 2010 Commonwealth games as well.
  • Amit Panghal

This 25-year old amateur from Haryana Boxer will represent India in the 52 kg weight category. He won silver medal at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships in the Flyweight division and a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games. He is definitely a young talent to watch out for in the Olympics.
  • Saikhom Mirabhai Chanu

Chanu is an Indian weight-lifter from Manipur and the only weight-lifter to qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2021. She has won multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games and World Championships. She will be competing in the 49 kg weight category. She has been awarded the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for her achievements.
